Chapter 20

The youngest member of the Daniels clan pulled up to the curb outside Shae’s apartment and launched into her third attempt to redeem J.D. “I know you’re upset. But don’t do anything reckless until you’ve had a chance to calm down and think.”

Shae got out of the car and glanced through the passenger side window and waved so long to Vee. “Thanks for the ride.” Shae waved at the security guard as she crossed the lobby on her way to the elevator.

Riding the elevator to the penthouse, Shae let out a soft moan of pain. Tonight had been difficult. Actually it had been more than difficult. She’d barely been able to maintain a civil expression while spending most of the evening with the Daniels family without J.D.

Anger rose quickly and frighteningly when Shae thought of how he’d found a moment to call and tell her that he wouldn’t be making it back to the party in time to take her home. She’d never been so embarrassed in her life. How could he have done that to her?

Concerned for her friend, Vee had volunteered to drive Shae. On the ride home, J.D.’s sister had talked nonstop, desperately trying to convince Shae to give herself some time to relax before making any decisions about her relationship that she might later regret.

What Vee didn’t know was Shae had already made her decision. After entering the penthouse, she marched purposefully through the apartment to her bedroom. She removed her dress and heels, slipped into a worn pair of denims and a comfortable T-shirt, and headed into the bathroom to wash off her makeup.

J.D. would be here soon. Shae knew that. He’d step through her front door with his apologies and explanations, begging for her forgiveness.

As she waited, her thoughts drifted to her mother’s remarks about her relationship. Vivian Weitherspoon had cautioned her daughter against opening her heart to a man that she barely knew, suggesting that she slow down the pace to give them time to learn more about each other. Ignoring her mother’s advice, Shae had plowed ahead as her feelings blossomed into love. Heading into the living room, Shae dropped onto the sofa, reached for the remote and turned on the television, absently watching the ten o’clock news.

Could she do it? Would she be strong enough to break things off with him when she loved him so much? She didn’t and wouldn’t know until he walked through the door.

Thirty minutes later there was a knock on her door. Shae rose, ambled down the hall and let him in before returning to her spot on the sofa. J.D. rushed into the apartment and stood in the center of the room, hands shoved inside the back pockets of his Dockers.

“Sweetheart, I’m sorry,” he began in a concilatory tone. “Everything went haywire once we got to the airport.”

Silently watching the man she loved, Shae waited until he ran out of steam before saying, “We need to talk.”

His eyes opened wide before he dropped onto the sofa.
